Joe Alexander

Our Mission Statement

The mission of the Joe Alexander Scholarship Foundation is to raise, invest, and distribute money for the purpose of awarding scholarships and grants to deserving students.

History

Rotary

Joe Alexander was an early member of the Rotary Club of Bakersfield East.  As the owner of A-C Electric Company, a prominent electrical contractor in Bakersfield, Joe had a strong interest in supporting the educational process. He was an active member of the club’s scholarship committee for many years.

At times he would dip into his own pocket to help students when there were more qualified candidates than scholarship money available. On other occasions he made loans to students who had no other way to raise money to further their education.

Joe believed that one of the great things about receiving a scholarship was not just the goods and services it buys, but rather the material recognition of the student’s ability and accomplishments. He felt that this recognition couldn’t help but produce greater self-confidence, and in turn a more successful person.

Foundation Formation

After Joe’s death in 1975, the Joe Alexander Scholarship Foundation was formed in his honor and memory. The foundation corpus has grown through contributions from the members of the Bakersfield East Rotary Club, other Rotaries, the Alexander family and our Elegant Evening of Wine fundraiser. The Foundation provides academic scholarships to students from East Bakersfield High School, Highland High School and Garces High School. In addition, the Foundation provides vocational scholarships to deserving high school seniors, community college students, and trade school students.

Foundation Goals

The Joe Alexander Scholarship Foundation Board of  Directors has established a goal of increasing the corpus to $1,000,000 within the next ten years.  The Board feels that this level of capital will provide scholarships supporting over 35 students per year.
